Tintypes.
These photos were taken on metal plates with a black coating, making them beautiful positive images!

Ambrotypes.
These photos were taken on transparent glass plates with a mirror-like black coating, called "japanning", on the back to turn them from a photo negative to a positive image! Where tintypes produce mirrored images, ambrotypes produce non-mirrored photos where text is legible.

Paper Mattes.
Each plate can be fitted into a custom-made paper matte, designed to closely mimic the styles popular in the period. Choose from two styles currently available!
Albumen and Salt Prints.
Our prints use two methods, albumen, which uses a light sensitive coating made from egg whites dating to the 1840s, and salt, which uses a coating made with salt dating to the 1830s. A glass negative is placed in front of hand-sensitized paper and exposed to the sun. The result is a brown toned print on high quality paper.
